❖ Version History ❖
September 12th-26th, 2025
We are absolutely on a roll getting the accessory kits ready for Royal Threadcount… but I have a hilarious idea that has been lurking in the back of my mind for a long time now…. back to the earliest days of Royal Threadcount’s mechanic design.
Way back when we created the betting mechanic for the communal tic-tac-toe board around this time last year (as featured in episode #13 of the Royal Threadcount Design Journal), I made a chart for tracking the statistics of the betting mechanic so that I could figure out how it works for myself before implementing it into the gameplay.
After showing several people this chart, I started getting questions about whether or not I intended to release this information to the public when it game to the game begin released… and the more I thought about it, the more it sort of occurred to me that someday someone would potentially make this sort of chart for themselves to study the math, and it would be cool to give it to them.
…Also, what better way to give it to the people than to call them out for siding with the Yakuza when playing our game so that they can cheat the math to their advantage!
So anyway, in the featured image of this post above is my very first prototype for this design idea. My initial image was this thing acting as a device you hang from the wall while you play, and you can take turns glancing over its secrets… but then I received this version in the mail & realized I was completely wrong. It needed to be a chart oriented horizontally:

Now, I thought I might be done making the chart with this second design, but unfortunately, when it arrived in the mail it was almost too blurry to read at all. The size of the print needed to be much larger than I anticipated to be more legible.
This was a bit of an issue, because as you can see, the image above takes up every little inch of design space to create the imagery that we already had. the new task at hand was to make the images within the design smaller so that we can make text larger… its a bit of an oxymoron, but I swear it is exactly what we need.
After getting quite a bit frustrated drawing this entire chart for a third time over the course of a couple of weeks, I finally landed on this design:

Much to my surprise, the changes actually work out really nicely. We manage to condense everything down, expand the font size by almost 6 points, and add in a much more clear chart of information to help explain how to read the chart. and while we are on that point, here’s how the chart actually works:
1. Turn Prediction
When it is your turn, before you roll the dice it is always time to consider sowing the board with silk (making a bet). To get a more informed decision on that, check the shape of the board and find its equivalent on the chart above. This chart will tell you right away what your potential earning are for the turn, and the risks you might incur along the way.
2. Informed Betting Techniques
One special trick of this chart is that you can use it to partial bet. Partial betting allows you to convert your starting location on the chart toward a better set of odds without placing the maximum allotted bet for the turn. This technique can be honed in by identifying special shapes along the right side of the chart & finding the cheapest ways to recreate them from positions on the left side of the chart.
3. Identifying Guaranteed Profits
The most interesting thing about the chart is that it reveals each and every configuration on the board that can yield guaranteed profits when making certain bets. getting familiar with these shapes will net you quite a bit of wealth when used the right way!
Whether you’ll like to admit it or not, joining the Yakuza will absolutely make you a wealthier and more skilled player in our little game of silk… but are you willing to teach your peers how to compete against you, or hoard all the power to yourself!? (you’re gonna wanna. This thing is so much fun to use once you get the hand of it).
Once we landed on our favorite design, I got to photographing & getting the imagery for our Kickstart campaign ready as soon as I could:

Be sure to stay tuned in for our next episode of the Librarium Games Design Journal for Royal Threadcount, where we will go over yet another crazy deal working in the background for more accessory options in the Kickstarter!
